July 7, 2014 Vava’U
Riding out a blow in protected Vaka’Eitu bay. Got a bit of welcome rain which washed all the salt off the boat. On shore we found an abandoned resort, crumbling in the jungle. Giant spiders in the trees, and strange tentacles in the tidepool cracks which retract into the rocks when touched. Saw our first Antarctic humpback whales!
We’ve been in Neiafu harbor the previous few days. The King was in town for his birthday and things were insane. The culmination was a “block party” which quickly disintegrated into chaos & the police clamped down heavily on events. Tonga is a wild place!
